What Sweden needs is less talk and more ‘Goddammit, let’s do it!’

What Sweden needs is less talk and more ‘Goddammit, let’s do it!’

While going through some old photos from my years at IKEA, I came across a snapshot of a page from the book Only Those Who Are Asleep Make No Mistakes – Fifteen Crises That Shaped IKEA.

There is one passage in particular from March 2004 that has stayed with me throughout my career:

“The answer to that question takes us back to a Swedish banking conference in March of 2004. Kamprad is a reluctant participant, feeling he has been lured to the event. Finally, he tells the audience from the stage what he thinks about the whole thing: ‘It’s all talk and nothing but talk. Show me results! What Sweden needs is less talk and more “Goddammit, let’s do it!”’”

In large organizations, it is remarkably easy to get trapped in analysis loops, steering committees, and slide decks describing work instead of actually doing the work. Whenever a team gets stuck debating theoretical edge cases rather than testing something real in the field, that quote is still the best reminder I know: build a small prototype, put it in front of real users, and show results.
